Against his wishes, he entered the services of the Commercial Bank of Austalia in Yarra St. , Geelong, at age 16. His father was one of the three Directors. Charles (as he was known) ha d a natural leaning towards working on the land. He had an agreement with his father that h e would work in the bank for five years, and then he would start work on the home property.
The bank transferred him to the Ballan branch, gradually rising until he reached the positio n of Ledgerkeeper. He met his future wife, Mary Anne Flack in Ballan. After 5 years he resign ed from the bank and returned to the home property. James Noble by then owned another propert y named 'Glentree' of approx 1200 acres, situated about 12 miles from 'Charlemont'.
Charles was placed in charge of the property on a wage of 100 Pounds per annum. He continue d to live with his father and travelled to the property 2 or 3 times a week. He improved th e property and enlarged it to about 3000 acres, but due to the rough ground, reduced it agai n to about 1800 acres.
When he married, his father built a house at 'Glentree' and made them a present of the whol e property. Unfortunately Mary died in childbirth. The loss of his wife deeply affected Charl es, and he went to live in a cottage on another property owned by his father at Swampy Creek , since re-named Anglesea, where he remained for 5 years. In 1879 he married Camilla Anne Atk ins, and the couple again took up residence at 'Glentree'. Camilla died in 1923 while on a vi st to one of her daughters in Rainbow. Charles returned to the cottage at Anglesea. He reside d there during the summer months, and with his sister Evelyn Wray in Geelong during the winte r months
